A Smashing Show

Reminiscent of rock concerts where the final act includes a guitar smashing, KTL during January of 09 featured a message series on rules. Our primary purpose was to establish some official rules for our KidsTown Live show. (see this article for what we came up with) We also took some time to look in our Bibles at some stories that talked about the rules our God has set up. One of our main lessons was on the Ten Commandments. We took a detour on this story by not really talking specifically about the commandments as what most teachers do, but rather the consequences that ensued when one of the commandments was broken even before Moses made it down out of the mountain. Our story came from Exodus 32.
As Pastor Josh was telling the part of the story about how Aaron took all the gold of the people and fashioned this golden calf out of the fire for them to worship (vs1-5), he had some of the girls from our audience up on stage decorating some little plaster cast figurines. Now when Pastor Josh reached the part in the story where Moses came down out of the mountain and discovered what the sinful people had done, he called on the boys to come to the stage to do what Moses did. Much to the girls' horror, the boys were given goggles, gloves, and a hammer to do what Moses did. The pictures that follow this article feature River Curtis, one of the boys who thoroughly enjoyed smashing the idol to bits. When there was nothing left of the plaster figurines but dust and rubble, Pastor Josh had the boys push all the remains into a pitcher of water and again he asked for volunteers. By this time, whatever it was going to be, there was an enthusiastic raising of hands for the volunteer position. Pastor Josh, however, chose no one, saying he was only kidding at this point because what happened next in the story was kind of nasty as it says that Moses made the people drink the water with the crushed idol in it (vs20). Pastor Josh finished the story by saying that many people even died by the sword of Moses and by a plague from God that day because of their disobedience to God's laws.
After such a morning, we feel pretty confident that the boys and girls won't soon forget that God hates disobedience. They were also all pretty glad that God grants us all lots of mercy these days and they were most grateful to be receiving their fruit juice boxes for snack time rather than Moses' drink mix.
