Awana Olympics

Mark your calendar! On Saturday, February 28th our AWANA Sparks and T&T Clubbers will be competing at Christian Fellowship Church, Ashburn, VA in the Sparks-A-Rama and AWANA Games against other AWANA clubs in the area, playing games they have learned during Club game time.

The Awana Games and Sparks-a-Rama is an annual sporting event held on the Awana Game Circle among area Awana Clubs. Each church compiles one or more team(s) and competes with 3 other teams. This unique ministry to girls, boys, and their parents has grown tremendously over the years. This is a memory-making experience for everyone involved, whether or not our team “wins”!

These exciting activities promote teamwork, fun, and good sportsmanship. We would like to see as many children as possible participate in this event. Teams must consist of boys and girls of various ages. Every child that makes the team will compete.

This is a great opportunity for our children to meet many other children from AWANA clubs all over and participate in the games that they love!

In order to be eligible to participate you must return a filled out permission slip (see below for link to form that you can print out and bring to Awana). The participant must also have completed ten sections in their Awana handbooks since September to be eligible. You must also make the required practice for your particular age's games:

T&T Games Practice - Sunday, Feb 15th 4-6pm Gym (pizza & drinks provided)

Sparks-a-Rama Practice - Sunday, Feb 22nd 4-6pm Gym (pizza & drinks provided)

Clean sneakers, long pants, and the provided green Awana shirt is the mandatory team dress code. The Awana shirt will be given out on the morning of the games. They will be recollected at the end of the games for next year's use.

Please do not come to any of the remaining Awana Sundays leading up to the games in flip flops, crocks, dresses, etc if you are intending on competing for a spot on the team. You need to be practicing in what you will be competing in.

Turning in the form and attending the required practice does not mean you are on the team, unfortunately. There are a limited number of spots in each age and gender category. In some categories, it is very easy to make the team (such as 3-4 grade boys), but in others (like 3-4 grade girls) it is very hard to make the team because there are a lot of eligible girls. For all categories where there are more eligible participants than there are slots, the participants will need to perform well at the practice as the coaches and directors will be viewing this as a "tryout" and only their top choices will make the team. Some factors that do come in to play in such situations are athletic ability, age, and prior participation. Some questions we ask are: "Has this child ever participated before?", "Is this there last year of eligibility?", "Do they bond well with the others we will be taking?" You will be contacted personally if you have made the team.

On the day of the Games, Feb 28, the church van will be taking all participants from the church parking lot to Christian Fellowship Church and back. If it is more advantageous for you to meet us at the church you may certainly do so, however, you must clearly communicate these intentions with your team's coach and John Montgomery. The address for the church is 21673 Beaumeade Cir, Ashburn, VA.

If you can help us with carpooling or driving one of the two church vans, please also let us know this.

T&T will leave Capital Baptist Church at 7 am, Games are from 9-11am, and will return to CBC by noon.

Sparks will leave CBC at 10:15 am, Games are from 12:30-2:30pm, and will return to CBC by 3:30pm.

Parents are welcome to follow in personal vehicles or ride in the van, space permitting. Please put in your request early for a van ride if you wish to do this. John or Norah will let you know if there will be room available.
